Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas issued a strong statement on his way to Brussels, where he is due to attend the European Council meeting tomorrow.

"If European territory is invaded, the EU needs to act decisively. Russia is escalating the conflict with all means and is not even hiding it," Mr Rõivas said.

"Europe must continue to send clear and practical signals to president Putin. These should take the form in stronger sanctions, which show that Russian policies will cost them dearly."

"Estonia supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. We condemn the military action of Russian Federation in Ukraine," the Prime Minister added.

Special meeting of the European Council on Saturday is scheduled to fill out the remaining EU top posts. However, events in Ukraine have made many EU leaders to call for a discussion on the block’s response to Russia.
