Former classmates and many of the local inhabitants were present at the funeral. The Estonian paper SL Õhtuleht reported that according to Jaan Rahuküla, the headmaster of Mustvee’s Russian secondary school, the funeral ceremony was held in accordance with Russian Orthodox traditions.

Dmitri’s mother pointed out that her son was a local; his friends included both Estonians and Russians.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Dmitri was one of hundreds of rioters who vandalised and looted stores. Evidence of this was provided by video footage, taken on the night, as well as items that were found in his pockets with price tags taken from the kiosk on Pärnu road.
