Affirming strong relations and alliance between Estonia and the United States, President Barack Obama will visit Estonia on 3 September. The visit will underline America’s commitment to the Baltic States in light of the tense situation in Ukraine, which has also raised concerns about the security in the Baltic Sea region.

Estonia, a tiny North-European country with its own language, a strong national will and identity has a difficult history with Russia, its large Eastern neighbour. This has made Estonia one of the most outspoken critics against Russian expansionism and President Putin’s regime.

To shed more light on the events in the Baltic Sea region in the context of President Obama’s visit, and to share more information about Estonia with the world, Delfi.ee will start offering news in English from 25 August. "It’s a significant occasion in the history of Delfi.ee – for the first time we will be offering daily news in three languages: Estonian, Russian, and English," said Urmo Soonvald, the Editor-in-Chief of Delfi and Eesti Päevaleht.

"After the test period, we will evaluate whether there is a demand to offer our news about Estonia in English in the long-term. If we see a strong interest from readers, we are ready to continue with this new project on a permanent basis."

Delfi.ee English-based news will be launched with a focus on the subjects concerning President Obama’s visit - the security situation in the Baltics and the relations between Estonia and Russia. Important current events and Estonian history relevant to the visit will also be reflected. The English language news section will be edited by Silver Tambur, the Editor-in-Chief of London-based online magazine www.estonianworld.com.
