AMD Releases New Athlon, K2 Chips
Advanced Micro Devices has released a 750-MHz Athlon microprocessor, as well as a 533-MHz version of its older K6-2 chip.
"With the 750-MHz AMD Athlon, AMD has rolled out the fastest x86 processor of the millennium," said Dana Krelle, vice president of marketing at AMD's Computation Products Group.
The 750-MHz Athlon is the first chip to be manufactured using AMD's 0.18-micron technology. At Comdex earlier this month, AMD executives said the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company had transferred all its Athlon manufacturing to the finer 0.18-micron process. The chips, which are designed with standard aluminum interconnects, are being manufactured at Fab 25 in Austin, Texas.
The 750-MHz Athlon and 533-MHz K6-2 are both available for $799 and $167, respectively, in lots of 1,000 pieces.
